Why The Good Grocer loves them

Not only is this quintessentially English brand's wine dry, fresh, beautifully light and absolutely delicious, it's also packaged in lightweight, endlessly recyclable aluminium cans. The Uncommon is as serious about minimising its environmental impact as it is about making excellent quality wine.

We're also more than a little obsessed with the delightfully quirky packaging.

their story

B Corp certified The Uncommon, was founded in 2018 by friends Henry Connell and Alex Thraves, who quit their corporate jobs with a dream of creating a modern, sustainable English wine brand. Today, The Uncommon is the UK’s number one producer of English wine in a can and the winner of multiple awards.

They make everything dry and fresh to allow the delicacy of the fruit to shine and have finely tuned their craft to nurture local notes like green apples, elderflower and strawberries. They have created wines that are unmistakably ‘of England’.

From day one, The Uncommon have prioritised minimising their impact on the environment. Their wine is packaged in 250 ml sleek, lightweight aluminium cans that are 100% recyclable and have a carbon footprint 86% lower than glass bottles. They use no single use plastic.

Their canning facility is almost entirely powered by renewable energy, generated by four on-site wind turbines, solar panels and world changing heat pump technology using water from disused mines. As a result, their canning process is carbon positive.

Prioritising locality, all stages of The Uncommon’s grape growing and winemaking happen within a 50-mile radius of their South London home.

At their vineyard in Kent, they sew wildflowers between the rows of grapes, and beehives are set off to the side to improve biodiversity and promote soil health. Since 2022 they have partnered with Kent Wildlife Trust to support pioneering rewilding projects, including the reintroduction of wild bison to Kent.

As certified members of Sustainable Wine of Great Britain, they are held accountable to rigorous levels of sustainable grape growing and wine making practices, by ensuring they maintain soil health, manage yields optimally, minimise pesticide inputs, promote biodiversity,  reduce their carbon footprint per hectare and practice recycling.
