their story

The oldest family owned and operated sea salt maker in Australia, the Olsson Family have been making solar sea salt since 1948.

Olsson’s sea salt is made from only one ingredient – seawater - harvested from two of the world’s most pristine areas of salt water: The Great Barrier Reef and The Great Australian Blight, making it an entirely pure, natural and sustainable product.

Solar sea salt’s manufacturing involves no chemical processing. Nothing is added and nothing is taken away, besides water through natural evaporation. Under the influence of the sun and wind, seawater evaporates in successive ponds until fully concentrated, when the salt crystallizes on the floor of the pond. Then it’s scooped up, washed in seawater, dried and packaged. That's it.

Olsson’s are committed to environmental responsibility and package their salts in recyclable kraft canisters or their iconic stoneware jars.

Olsson’s are committed to supporting local charitable causes, for example 100% of the proceeds from their Native Australian Plum Salt are donated to the McGrath Foundation's Summer of Pink campaign, supporting them in their efforts to help families impacted by breast cancer.
